Happy 79th Birthday #Daddy,

Wow…year 9 of not celebrating with you. I woke up around 4am remembering how good you were with birthdays, always sending those early morning messages. An intense urge to text you overcame me, but how can I? With all this tech, heaven still has no 📞 or AI.

I saw a joke this morning and immediately heard you laugh. I’m grateful I can at least go back and listen to our convos and your voice. Just the other day, I caught myself laughing at my need to get a new remote control and remembered how much you wanted one for the TV in Salone. I already knew you wouldn’t use it, based on how you were during the airport pickup. I still indulged you, and bought one from Amazon, along with Joyce Meyer’s Trusting God Day by Day. If there was one thing about you I adored, it was your immense faith. Even in the valley of the shadow of death, Daddy, you remained faithful. You trusted you’d get well and I deeply appreciate you giving us hope during your pain.

By now I know you’ve welcomed Dr James Sanpha Koroma, who like you missed a milestone birthday. You were both stewards of Sierra Leone and gave so much through your work and generosity. Sad times for his family. May he rest in peace.

I miss you so dearly, Pops. I’m even craving digestive biscuits with this tea I’m having…your thing most mornings. Found my first grey hair last year, and I welcomed it. You loved your greys, you weren’t about dye business. They made you look distinguished, something I always admired.

When I think of all you accomplished before you passed, I sometimes wonder if I’ll ever come close. Then I hear you say: yu gɛt fɔ mek yu yon path, na fɔ try yu bɛst.

Daddy, as always, thank you. Your words guide me daily. Your memory lives on. On this day 9 years ago, you were laid to rest, and rest you shall. As in Revelation 14:13: “Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on. Yes, says the Spirit, they will rest from their labour, for their deeds will follow them.” Your deeds, JBJJ, were plentiful and abundant.

9 years gone on 9/9. Today has turned into another state of emergency in my life, such a stark contrast from last week’s peace and tranquillity.

I woke up and prayed for you, as I always do. I thanked God for the blessing you were to so many, both at home and abroad. You gave so selflessly, even when it meant being left with nothing yourself. I am grateful I got to witness and experience such generosity and kindness.

On my morning walk, I passed through town and wondered what you would think of the state of affairs in this God-forsaken place in 2025. Observed a few churches including Grandpa Maitland’s. I wandered into the park and noticed again how swans have the longest necks. In that moment, I wished I could text you my first thought: “This must be what langa trot really means.” Many wouldn’t understand, but we always got each other’s humour.

Back at home, I listened to your Mariah Carey and Alicia Keys albums. I remembered how you insisted I buy Songs in A Minor for you. I still have your copy, along with so many of your other CDs I collected after your passing. Music was something we truly shared and loved together.

Not long after, the emergency began. Lord knows, when God works, the devil works harder. But he cannot prevail. I am grateful for the presence of mind you instilled in me, allowing me to make informed decisions today. All is well now and just finished being seen by the last Dr. You raised me to be outspoken, and that has helped me to advocate for myself in this very moment.

I find myself in the very place where your final journey began. How I wish I could remember you differently today, but alas, it was not meant to be. They say man proposes and God disposes. So as long as His will is done, I can only show gratitude.

Daddy, I will forever miss your flat-footed walks that carried you far, your grounding in God, your strength in defending the misunderstood, and your honesty about both your successes and your mistakes. Integrity was part of your very nature. I love you, JBJJ. Continue to rest in perfect peace. 🙏🏾❤️‍🩹

Grateful for all these versions of me. The cheeks stayed chubby, but the glow-up, grit, gratitude, grace and growth continue to increase every single day. Will forever nurture little Sanya. She deserves it ❤️‍🩹.

In other news, da rɛp orinch we wi tu nɔ lɛk is wreaking havoc on unsuspecting Americans with ICE and disturbing their peace. It’s a little destabilising to say the least.

I am currently doing a collaboration with the chimpanzee sanctuary, Tacugama, on Salone Idioms. I have so much planned for them, but it’s been hard to bring to fruition as the young man I was liaising with sadly passed away last week. I’m very determined to execute this project like you taught me with zeal and excellence to keep this legacy alive.

By now, I’m certain you’ve dabbed Mummy’s bestie and can see that we are all overcome with sadness due to her passing. Take care of her please, she was kind to our family 🤗.

Yesterday I saw a play in your honour, called Dear Father. The way in which her dad fought diligently for her was a true depiction of our relationship. It showed how influential fathers can be in their daughter’s lives, just like you are in mine. Amidst secrets, trauma and pain, you always were my advocate. Still are and forever will be.

Daddy, you excelled at everything you touched. You brought me up with the “training and instruction of the Lord” (Ephesians 6:4) and I am forever grateful. Thank you for caring for me, showing empathy towards me and having honest and real conversations with me. There is no one like you and I’m glad God chose you to be my Father.

I will love and celebrate you always ❤️.

As much as I expected this, it’s still deeply disappointing. To all my friends and family in 🇺🇸 who yearned for real change, I stand with you. Thinking hard about when I’ll visit again now that this man is back in power. The country feels overshadowed by the return of someone who’s let down so many, disregarded women’s rights, and demonstrated the power of misogyny. His empty promises feel like a future being faked—a facade masking his true intentions. Feeling disappointed and heartbroken for those who must endure his staged antics once more.

You gave it your all, Kamala; you put up a good fight. But as always, few are willing to set aside their ego to see a woman as president.

And to the Black folks out here claiming that women only wanted a female leader to resolve ‘mother wounds,’ perhaps consider the ‘father wounds’ that may have led to trauma, normalising abuse. We’re all working on something, and no one should shame another for wanting to see a Black woman on top for a change.

Yesterday I was recalling my love for cashews and craving some cashew nuts. When I was little, you used to always know when I would’ve gone and eaten the ripe cashews from the tree I used to scope out from my bedroom window. Maybe it’s because they were yellow, but I just loved eating the fruit. One thing about cashews, they would stain your clothes if the juice dripped onto them. I’d sneakily eat the fruit and keep the pile of ‘handles’, as I liked to call them, to extract the nuts by ‘pachin’ them with Miss Julia later. When you got home from work, I’d come back inside from playing in the garden after school and you’d ask if I had eaten any cashews. I’d lie and swiftly say ‘no’. Of course you’d already seen the stain on my clothes and would just laugh 😆 as I fussed to collect your heavy suitcase and carry it upstairs. You never punished me for my little lie. That’s how I know I was truly a daddy’s girl.

In much later years, Easter 2011, André and I decided to treat you and Mummy to a lobster dinner at Shangri La. You were not impressed with us having to wait a full 4 hours for this dinner to arrive. I know you were fed up but just didn’t want to disappoint us and have us go home to eat something lovely Tamba would’ve prepared. I do wonder if they had to go catch a live 🦞 that night. Your face said it all. Utterly fed up.

James said to me recently that he doesn’t remember having any conversations with you. I had to remind him of how much like you he is, especially days after your passing, when he used to comfort his Nana.

Daddy, you were kind, patient, loving, empathetic and extremely considerate of how others felt. Thank you for instilling in me these values and for always knowing what to say in every situation.

Cheers 🥂 to you today Daddy. A glass of rosé coming up.

It’s another Father’s Day and this one happens to be on the Day of the African Child and Eid al-Adha. I know how much you loved all things Africa specifically. Even though you were Christian, you had no issue celebrating every occasion with your Muslim friends too. One of the multitude of things I love about you. Wi ɔl na wan. No one is better than anyone else, regardless of tribe, creed, religion, colour and the likes. That’s my JBJJ, a real advocate for the people.

Today, I dedicated it to having a slow day, with church and then servicing your watch. I keep meeting versions of you in the beautiful people I’ve met recently. Spoke with Bal and Lord knows he is wise beyond imagination. He is dedicated to growth and the healthy journey through life, similar to mine. I recall all the words of affirmation he gave you that last Monday you spent with us. He’s told me “that every moment shared with loved ones is a celebration”.

That got me thinking about the quote you once told me about not giving people a reason to disappoint us. I realised ‘people’ has been me at some point. I have been breaking my own heart incessantly by being so sad at times because you’re not here in the physical realm. Choosing joy is all I can do moving forward because that’s how you spent your life, enjoying it, travelling, being free and happy. As much as I miss you, I know you’re still here watching and directing my moves. God knows you have literally directed me to Him, because if there is one thing you were, it was faithful. I am forever inspired by you Pops.

Thank you for raising me to be the woman of substance because what I saw in you was a father who knew what was right, who could not be easily influenced. A man who knew how to celebrate others, advocate for and show kindness to others. Your philanthropy was not to be slept on. Your faith was exemplary. I pray that I possess an iota of these gifts you were blessed with. I will forever look up to you.

Wish I could hear your voice and views on all that’s gone on in our usual Sunday convo today, but alas, it isn’t to be.

Thank you so much for that dream the other day. You were both Wise and a Warrior. I know that those same qualities were instilled in and will thus be birthed from me, sooner or later, when it works in my favour. Everything I need to know is unfolding before me and I am so happy we had that type of a bond. As in Psalms 94:19, you were my consolation in times of anxiety and you brought me joy. I’m grateful you still do so from beyond this realm.

The tears fall just as badly as they did on that fateful Friday in 2016. I figured it’d feel better at some point soon but I was greatly mistaken. Just so happens that your memorial falls on a Friday too this year. Talk about tracing back my steps. My heart is heavy and I know it’s because of all the love I have for you.

Considering you’re now 6 years settled in the heavenly realm, you’re fully aware Aunty Flo left us in my birthday, then Uncle Mac too, suddenly. And now Aunty Remie too left last month. I just know they won’t be lonely having you there to take care of them, being your witty self whilst cracking endless jokes.

I’m more than certain you know 👑 Lizzy transitioned too yesterday. Knowing you, you’re probably doing what you do best by being the perfect advocate when she faces up to Princess Diana. With you there I know that there wouldn’t be any ‘heavenly kus kas’ but instead a peaceful and forgiving reunion. 😂

This year has been another trying one for me and oh have I missed you and your wisdom. The eyes really changed my outlook on life, literally. I know I pulled through because of your protection. I also couldn’t make good on that promise I made you in 2012. I was close though but I know God has a bigger and more divine plan that I cannot yet comprehend.

I pray so much that I can give just a fraction of the goodness that you did to others. You lived your life in service to others, you never saw creed, colour or class. You were a selfless human being who truly cared for everyone you came into contact with. This I adored the most about you. Thank you for the love, support, memories and for leaving me with the best gift that I’ve ever known, you gave me purpose Daddy. I will continue to push forward in that vein because you were my true inspiration.

In last night’s dream, I was telling two little girls about you JBJJ. As long as I have breath, I will let everyone I meet know how much of a special person you were.

Afternoon jewels. Last weekend as a vibe. Sunday was the highlight for me. Getting back to my old ways of exploring London and being artsy. Started at the @vamuseum seeing #africafashion. A fantastic curation but disheartened I didn’t see one Sierra Leonean designer there. I must change this.
