Shea Hair & Body Butter

Updated: Mar 19, 2024

Travelling with my hair products can be so tedious. For my most recent holiday, my shea butter mix was a lifesaver as one tub was all I needed for my hair and body needs for the duration of my stay. As soon as I came back to the UK, I had a weird reaction on my face which I think came about because of the abrupt change in weather. The rash was cured quite easily by this mix which my grandmother swears by. In Sierra Leone, we call it “orie” and it is a Godsend. The rash disappeared in 24 hours.

Ingredients:

Instructions:

Place the shea butter in a bowl and separate into smaller pieces. Break off a bit of the cocoa butter which is rock solid at room temperature. You will have to microwave this to melt it a little to measure. Add all but the melted cocoa butter, flaxseed oil and castor oil to the shea butter and proceed to blend. I used a hand mixer. There should be no lumpy butters present. When the mixture is smooth, fold in the liquefied oils before mixing with the blender for a minute to ensure the butter is completely blended

Tip: Make sure all butters are at room temperature otherwise blending will be a right chore.

Shea butter has essential fatty acids and oleic acid which makes it very easily absorbent in the skin and hair. Castor oil like shea butter also contains healing qualities and helps thicken hair. I use coconut oil in almost all my butters as it smells wonderful and is the only oil that penetrates the hair shaft. Cocoa butter is rich in Vitamin E and is great for removing scars and the chocolatey smell is just divine.

This is the most versatile and the best butter I use on my hair and body. Use on my hair is as simple as

  1. Spray water on my hair (Liquid)

  2. Apply a leave-in conditioner (Cream)

  3. Add the butter (Oil)

This is the best way to keep my hair shiny, moisturised and springy and I love it. I hope you enjoy making this mix.
